Transparent LAN Service (TLS)
Overview
Lower the Cost of Connecting Multiple Sites
Transparent LAN Service (TLS, aka Switched Ethernet Services) gives you the opportunity to offer your customers lower costs for data communications at native Ethernet speeds between sites within mAny Frontier metropolitan service areas. TLS is available in two service types: Ethernet Multipoint Service (EMS) and Ethernet Relay Service (ERS) with multiple Class of Service options.
The fiber-based service eliminates the need for Frame Relay or ATM cards, reducing the costs usually associated with fast packet services. And, because this access, switching and transport service operates on a shared backbone, it offers additional economies.
How It Works
TLS is an all fiber-based, metropolitan area LAN interconnecting service.
TLS connects customer locations together at native LAN speeds and Ethernet interfaces of 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps and/or 1,000 Mbps Ethernet.
LANs are extended over a dedicated fiber loop into their local Verizon wire center, where Central Office based switches provide connectivity to circuits from the other locations, or access to a shared backbone from transport to other local wire centers if needed.
Benefits
- Cost effective service for implementing Wide Area Network (WAN) or Metropolitan Area Network (MAN)
- Frontier's unmatched fiber footprint within service areas simplifies connecting widely separated customer locations
- 24 x 7 network monitoring assures reliability and customer satisfaction
Applications
- Database replication
- Sharing common databases
- Archiving for Storage/Back-ups
- Teleworkers
- IP telephony
- Centralizing e-mail servers now dispersed across multiple locations.
Description
Verizon Transparent LAN Service provides for data communications at native LAN speeds between two or more sites in mAny Frontier-served metropolitan areas. It supports 10 Mbps Basic Ethernet, 100 Mbps Fast Ethernet and 1 Gbps Gigabit Ethernet.
Features & Options
- Ethernet Multipoint Service (EMS aka E-LAN) provides fully meshed, any-to-any connectivity, making it ideal for LAN to LAN networking. It is configured by connecting UNIs with one multipoint to multipoint EVC or VLAN and provides full port speed with two Class of Service options - standard and real time.
- Ethernet Relay Service (ERS aka EVPL) utilizes point-to-point and multipoint-to-multipoint Ethernet Virtual Connections (EVC) to define site to site or site to multiple site connections. ERS can support multiple EVC's enabling a hub and spoke configuration as well as the interconnection of multiple sites, in conjunction with a wide variety of EVC bandwidth options that enables incremental bandwidth scaling to meet your customers growing network requirements. EVCs are offered in 1 Mbps increments from 1-10 Mbps, 10 Mbps increments from 10-100 Mbps, and 100 Mbps increments from 100-1000 Mbps. ERS supports three Class of Service options - basic, priority and real time.
Availability
Verizon grandfathered Ethernet Transparent LAN Service (Ethernet TLS) in its FCC Tariff Nos. 1 and 20 (Tariffs) effective as of March 30, 2007 as a result of the forbearance Verizon received from certain common carrier regulation for several packet-switched broadband services, as well as non-TDM-based optical networking, optical hubbing, and optical transmission services (Forbearance). In accordance with this Forbearance relief, Frontier will now offer a service comparable to Ethernet TLS under a private carriage arrangement.
If you wish to place any new orders for Ethernet TLS, you will need to enter into a private carriage arrangement with Verizon for a comparable service. Subject to certain terms and conditions, you may make certain changes to your existing Ethernet TLS under the Tariffs. For a full description of all permitted changes, if any, please refer to the Tariffs. Please note that there are several rate elements, such as Ethernet Virtual Circuits (EVCs) and Interoffice Mileage that are available on a month-to-month term only.

Note: Certain services described above are provided on a private carriage basis (Private Carriage Services), while the terms and conditions of certain other of the services described above are set forth in full detail in Frontier's FCC Tariffs (Tariffed Services),. For all Private Carriage Services, the above summary is provided for your information and reference only. However, the actual terms, conditions, restrictions, limitations and the like for Private Carriage Services will be those set forth in the agreement between the customer and Frontier for such Private Carriage Service and shall govern over any inconsistent provisions set forth herein. For all Tariffed Services, any summary of Frontier's FCC Tariffs (Tariffs) set forth above is being provided for your convenience, but is not intended to provide a complete description of the terms and conditions of the Tariffs. You should not rely on this summary, and should conduct your own review and analysis of the Tariffs. Any failure or error by Frontier to fully or accurately set forth all relevant terms and conditions of the Tariffs shall not be deemed to bar Verizon from exercising its rights under the Tariffs. Notwithstanding anything to the contrary herein, the Tariffs shall govern over any inconsistent provision set forth herein. All services are not available in all areas, and are subject to availability of facilities and equipment.
Features
ERS offers greater scalability than Frame Relay, ATM or private line services because the service can be updated in granular bandwidth increments from 1 Mbps up to a full gigabit.
TLS UNI Port with Access Line Connection is available at the new 10 Mbps port speed to complement the existing 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps speeds.
E-NNI Port-only service allows wholesale customers to buy the ENNI port, unbundled from access and transport.
E-NNI port with access line connection has been introduced to allow customers the ability to purchase a packaged solution by combining the port interface with access and transport.
TLS ERS - Tunnel UNI Port with Access Line Connection (or Tunnel Access Service) allows customers to preserve their VLAN tag (both the VLAN ID and the priority) across the TLS network.
Frontier has introduced Ping the Network Interface Device (NID) as a new network testing feature for TLS. This feature allows you to provide an IP address and subnet mask that will be configured on Frontier's NID at an end user location.

TLS is available in two service models:
Ethernet Multipoint Service (EMS) service type:
- Ideal for Multipoint to Multipoint applications such as intra-company voice and LAN to LAN data
- Offers simple, connectionless and any to any connectivity
- Transparent to customer VLANs and Layer 2 control protocols
Class of Service Option
Real Time is offered on a per-UNI basis designed to support packet voice applications over the multipoint to multipoint service
Ethernet Relay Service (ERS) service type:
- Point-to-point, EVC's coupled with the ability to mix with multipoint-to-multipoint EVCs offer greater flexibility
- One or more EVCs may be allowed per UNI depending on the UNI service configuration
